News: Sep 19, 2018

Death of a leading geographical scholar

Professor David Lowenthal died peacefully at home in London on 15 September 2018. He had celebrated his 95th birthday with friends earlier in the year, in both London and San Francisco.
David had been a member of the UCL Geography faculty since 1972, and Emeritus Professor since 1985.

His last major publication, The Past is a Foreign Country-Revisited, received widespread praise in 2015, and he had been looking forward to proofreading his latest book, Quest for the Unity of Knowledge, based on lectures he gave in Stockholm in 2013.

A memorial meeting is planned for later in the year associated with the publication of his last book by Routledge.

He had held the first CCHS Public Annual Lecture at UCL in conversation with Beverley Butler.
