Co-curating the city: universities and urban heritage past and future II

Workshop organised by UCL/UGOT Centre for Critical Heritage Studies/Curating the City research cluster, in collaboration with Project Campus Näckrosen, University of Gothenburg.

Co-curating the city: universities and urban heritage past and future II : Göteborg 19-21 April.

The aim of this international workshop is to explore and understand how universities construct their identities in relation to their own histories and sites, and at the same time, through their interventions, participate in shaping the heritage of local populations in contrasting cosmopolitan city contexts. We will further consider how cities in turn shape their identities with reference to the academic institutions they host, and whether parallels can be drawn between universities and other institutions such as museums and libraries which are embedded in, and engaging with, the postcolonial city.

The site-based workshop, located in the Näckrosen area of the university campus, is based on a dialogic approach, and will take forward a comparative analysis of development processes at UCL and University of Gothenburg, as well as other university sites. It leads on from an initial workshop held in November 2016 at UCL Bloomsbury/ UCL East in London.

Workshop participants will include independent artists and architects as well as scholars and professionals from University College London, Chalmers University of Technology, London South Bank University, Lund University, KTH, Centre for Business History, Victoria & Albert Museum, Nätverkstan and The University of Gothenburg.

The venue for the workshop is the Gamla Hovrätten building (Department of Philosophy, Linguistics and Theory of Science) at the heart at the future University area "Näckrosen" at Olof Wijksgatan 6.
